Mauritius uses the Mauritian Rupee (MUR) as its currency. It is advisable to bring US Dollars or Euros to exchange at the airport in Mauritius. As for how much to exchange, if your hotel accommodations are already prepaid, you may only need cash for shopping or dining out for lunch. Many places now accept credit cards. However, there are still some places that only accept cash, such as local markets, street vendors, and taxis. If your itinerary in Mauritius is not pre-planned and you decide on activities once you’re there, it’s a good idea to have some cash on hand, as some activity providers and transportation services may only accept cash payments.

The primary languages in Mauritius are English, French, and the local Creole language. English is widely spoken and understood, although some locals may speak it with a French or Creole accent, so it’s still quite accessible for most English speakers.

The food quality in hotels is typically well-maintained. However, street vendors may not always adhere to the same hygiene standards. Whether or not you’ll have dietary adjustments largely depends on your individual tolerance. If you have a sensitive stomach, it’s advisable to avoid street food.
